        History

The St. Joseph’s Church, Sira is in the Archdiocese of Bangalore. It consists of three centre: Sira Town and the villages of Amalagondi and Jogayanapalya. Most of the early Christians of the parish migrated from Mysore especially during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Earlier, once in six months, the priests from Mysore Diocese used to come to these two villages and offer Masses and administer the sacraments.
The first church in Amalagondi was built in 1913 and in Jogayanapalaya in 1962. The first church in Sira was built in 1972. Later Sira and Jogayanapalya were made the substations of the parish of Hiriyur and Amalagondi was made a substation of Tumkur parish. In 1993 Sira was erected as a parish and Amalgondi and Jogayanapalaya were made the substations of Sira. On June 15th 2002 this parish was entrusted to the Salesians. At present, this parish consists of 52 families with about 240 Catholics.
