Fr Joffie Puthuva (Coordinator of Salesian Youth Apostolate in Kerala) organized a meeting of the animators (Salesians and Lay People) of Neighbourhood Youth Apostolate of Kerala Region. Representatives from more than 11 Salesian communities in Kerala actively participated in the meeting held at Don Bosco, Vaduthala on October 17th, from 4.15 p.m. to 6.45 p.m. Fr K.O. Thomas, the Vice-Provincial and Coordinator of the Youth Pastoral, recalled that ministry to youth is the proud Salesian heritage and briefed the gathering on the meeting of the Youth Pastoral Delegates of South Asia, held at New Delhi and presided over by Rev Fabio Attard, General Councilor, on September 17 & 18, 2009. He emphasized the need to revitalize or initiate Neighbourhood Youth Apostolate in all Salesian houses.
Fr Joffie presented a paper on the formation of Bosco Youth Groups (BYG). It was agreed upon that by the end of November, Neighbourhood Youth Apostolate will be in place in all our Salesian houses in Kerala. The gathering came to a consensus that all the oratory or youth centre members are to be organized along the principles of BYG. Units of BYG are to be initiated in all our academic, technical and parish settings. Even if there are seniors or elders in the youth centres, it is salutary that the leadership rest with members between 16 to 28 years of age. The local Salesian youth animator, in-charge of neighbourhood apostolate, will co-ordinate all these units formed around a Salesian community or presence. An animation meeting of all the Salesians in-charge of neighbourhood youth apostolate, along with three Salesian youth leaders each from every Salesian community or presence, has been fixed for Jan 9 and 10, 2009 in Central Kerala.
Let us add prayers to our efforts to revitalize youth apostolate in and around our Salesian settings.
Fr Joffie Puthuva, SDB
