When India speaks of 20-20 and is to make plans to send human beings into space, a large number of children’s thoughts and desires are limited to their every day struggle and as Abraham Maslow says they are stuck to their lower level needs. There are several children who are deprived of their childhood and made to work.
At this juncture CHILDLINE 1098 Kochi along with the Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), People’s Council for Social Justice (PCSJ), and District Labour Department, Ernakulam observed Anti Child Labour Day on June 12. The day was aimed at protection of the rights of children especially child labourers, and creation of awareness among social workers and MSW students and the public to curb the danger of child labour. A half- day seminar was held on Child labour- Laws and Challenges at Snehabhavan Annexe-CHILDLINE CENTRE on 12 June 2010. Resource persons were MR. JOY P.J, District Labour Officer, Enforcement, Ernakulam. (CHILD LABOUR-ERADICATION, RESCUE AND REHABILITATION, Adv. SANDHYA RAJU, State Director, HRLN, Ernakulam, ADV. K D VINCENT, Chairman, CWC, Ernakulam, Mr. N.A Mani, and Lect.. Sheelamma R. The day culminated in an awareness campaign in Cochin City by distributing awareness materials. Social work students and several school students and Childline team members joined the drive.
