History

The Salesian Presence in Deodurga began in May 1996, when the bishop of Bellary invited the Salesians to take up the most backward mission centers in the northern part of the dioceses in the districts of Raichur and Gulbarga. In August 1996, the Salesians visited Yadgir in Gulbarga district and felt the need of starting another presence there for the welfare of the people. Land was purschased and shed was built to initiate the work in Deodurga Taluk. There are 33 Catholic Families, comprising 212 persons, spread over 9 villages, 4 of which have a good Catholic presence. Pastoral activity is presently being focused on these 4 villages, in 3 of which villages chapel have been completed. The vast majority of the adults are still illiterate . on 5th June 2001, a boarding was launched with 20 children. Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph D’Silva, the bishop of Bellary, entrusted the parish of Sahayamatha at Deodurga to the Salesians in perpetuity on 24th November 2001. An English Medium School was inaugurated on 23 rd July 2003.

Scope

The scope of the mission consists of the integral Development of the people through educational, pastoral and social interventions in the Deodurg and Yadgir taluks. The Salesians are committed to the all round development of the people and the building up of an empowered and transformed society in a healthy, socio-cultural and eco-spiritual environment
