At Our Lady of Lourdes Church Salesians cater to the pastoral needs of the Catholic Community
The parish church situated in Basavanapura-Seegehalli on the outskirts of Bangalore city owes its origins to the initiative and hard work of the Fathers and Brothers of Kristu Jyoti College. Since 1967 the students of the Kristu Jyoti College actively involved themselves in social uplift programmes in and around the villages of Basavanapura and Seegehalli. Most of the villagers in this locality were poor and some were bonded labourers. A small church which already existed since 1969 was rebuilt by the Salesians in 1973 to cater to the spiritual needs of the people.
On November 6th, 1975, through the intervention of Brothers (Social Service Guild) from KJC 40 families were freed from bonded labour. The catholic population of this place was under the care of T C Palya Parish. A delegation from this village requested the Archbishop of Bangalore to allow KJC Fathers and Brothers to take care of their spiritual needs. Eventually in 1988, the mission station of Basavanapura – Seegehalli, under T C Palya parish was constituted and Fr. Mathew Vadakel SDB was appointed as the first parish priest. On July 10, 1988, in the centenary year of Don Bosco’s death, this centre was given the status of an independent mission and permanently handed over to the Salesians.
Initially, The Catholic population of the parish was spread out in 16 villages with about 150 families and extended up to Hosakote. The Brothers from KJC took up the task of re-evangelisation and also worked towards the education and employment of the children and people. Over the years with the increase in the number of parishioners the need for a bigger church was felt. Therefore a new parish church was built and inaugurated on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes in 1999. In February 2001, Don Bosco Computer Centre, Library and Youth Centre were inaugurated. In 2006 the substation of Hosakote was taken away from the Salesians and erected as an independent parish.
At present, the parish provides pastoral care to around 500 families residing mostly in the twin villages of Basavanapura and Seegehalli. The others are scattered in Swathanthranagar, R.M.S Colony, Chikkabasavanapura and Priyanka Nagar.
The stations of the Way of Light is a unique feature which is at present found only in this parish in the entire country.
