Archdiocese of Bangalore

Establishment Year 1979

Don Bosco Provincial House is the centre of animation  and governance of the province of Bangalore

Brief History

The Salesian province of Bangalore, dedicated to the sacred Heart of Jesus, was canonically erected on 19th March 1979 by the then Rector Major, Rev. Fr. Egidio Vigano SDB. In the absence of a Provincial House, the Provincial and his team had their residence at Kristu Jyoti College. Eventually the old Provincial House building was purchased at North Road and the Provincial Team moved into that building on 31st July 1979. The Provincial House was canonically erected on 14th December 1979 by the same Rector Major. In the course of time as the province and its activities grew steadily the infrastructure proved to be inadequate. Hence a new building was put up on Milton Street. The building was blessed and inaugurated on 11th February 2002. The Provincial House was shifted to the present building in May 2002. The primary purpose of the house is to function as the centre of animation and governance for the whole province and enable the confreres to realize the Salesian mission in our presences in Karnataka and Kerala.

The other forms of apostolate that are carried on at the province level also form part of the Provincial House.  The mission procure office which began in February 1980 strives to support the financial viability of the province by raising funds from people of good will who are willing to share in the Salesian mission.

BREADS, the development office of the province of Bangalore which began on 14th February 1994 takes care of the developmental programmes and activities of the province by way of organizing the projects, procuring the required aid and also the monitoring of the same.  Through the activities of BREADS based on Rights, the province envisages to build up an inclusive community where the poor and needy youth are enabled to be agents of change and transformation.

With the view of strengthening and make the Salesian youth ministry more vibrant Bosco Youth Services (BYS) was started in May 2006 in Kochi and Bangalore respectively.  BYS aims at empowering the youth in Karnataka, especially those in our settings and make them partners in bringing about transformation in the society.

As part of direct and immediate involvement on behalf of the poor, the community carries out a programme called ‘Share and Care’. With support of generous benefactors and like-minded people the community has been freely distributing food to 100 needy people since 16th October 2012 thus reaching out to the needy in a very concrete and tangible manner.

Bosco Institute of Social Sciences (BISS), located at Indira Nagar, is a Research, Training and Documentation on all Salesian services that we render in the Province inaugurated in 2005. Apart from publishing magazines and carrying out research projects, the institute also serves as Resource Centre for all the services rendered for the Youth.
