Don Bosco, Tumkur, originally known as Rinaldi Bhavan and re-named Don Bosco, is the aspirantate shifted from Mysore in June 1997. It is built on a 13-acre plot. The land was purchased in 1995. The construction of the building started in January 1996 and was completed in May 1998. The building was blessed on 21st October 1998. The house is situated 6 kms from Tumkur town off the Sira road. The Institution is surrounded by 5 villages in a radius of 5 km. with no direct transport facility. There are no high schools in any of these villages. There are only government primary schools. All are agricultural villages. The land is owned by landlords who live in the town. Most of the villagers are tenants who have no rights to the land. They have only livestock as their possessions.
The primary aim of Don Bosco, Tumkur, which began in 1997, is to prepare the boys from Karnataka state who aspire to the Salesian life and to promote the suitable ones to the pre-novitiate in Mysore. The institute facilitates the aspirants to deepen their faith, grow in human maturity, know Don Bosco and the demands of priestly and Salesian religious life, gain academic proficiency and accompanies them in the process of discernment. Besides the Aspirantate and Apostolic School, for the benefit of the young people of the neighbourhood, the community carries out various apostolates, viz. i) Savio Bhavan, home for poor boys ii) Academic School (KG, LP, HS), iii) Youth Centre, iv) Spoken English and Computer classes, v) pastoral care for the Christian community in the neighbourhood and migrant youth.
Having become aware of the social situations, the community with the help of the aspirants involves in the neighbourhood by reaching out to the nearby government primary schools on Thursdays where most of these children lack proper facilities and method of learning. Through the classes, value education and other extracurricular activities, both the clerics in Practical Training and the aspirants try to boost the morale of the children.
