Tharuni Mahila Abhivrudhi, a registered society under Don Bosco, Hospet, celebrated in a grand way the International women’s day on 8th March 2010. On that auspicious day it was very pleasant to see around 3000 SHG (Self Help Group) women coming together. Being involved in the society and various Governmental and Non-Governmental departments they felt the need of choosing the theme “Let the field may be anything, we should be respected”.
The media gave too wide publicity to the event. Dr. Usha (Hampi University, Hospet) in her talk brought out the point that women should respect others and in turn gain respect. She also stressed on women’s freedom, rights and equality in the society. In her talk to the women Dr. Usha focused on the need for self-confidence in order to play an active role and to take lead in the society, like Mrs Prathiba Patil (President of India) and late Mrs Indira Gandhi (Former Prime minister of India).
Mr. Deepak Kumar Singh (Congress Youth President, Hospet) came as the chief guest of the programme. In his inspiring speech, Mr. Deepak Singh mentioned about the active role of women in the parliament. He also called for improvement of Small Scale Industries by initiating various types of works.
In her speech Dr. Anandavalli spoke about women’s power and equality in the society. Women should come forward to hold certain positions in order to govern people and departments without corruption and exploitation.
One of the guests of honour, Mr. Jayanth Panthar, who is an owner of mines and a social worker, communicated that women’s power and voice should be heard. They should not be voiceless anymore in the society today.
Another guest of honour, Mr. Neelappa from State Bank of India (Hospet) spoke about the importance of girl children in the family and the role of mothers in their growth in the society.
Fr.K.D.Varghese sdb, the Rector of Don Bosco (Hospet) appreciated SHG women by saying “Mahila Shakthi Dodda Shakthi” which means, women’s power is a great power. He also congratulated them for their unity and will power. He exhorted them not to encourage child marriage, indicating health hazards and inability to manage a family. He emphasized education of children as a powerful means of bringing about much change in society, family and personal lives.
Sr. Celine MSMI, the Superior of Vimala Nivas Convent (Hospet), Mrs. Hanumanthamma (President, Tharuni organization), Miss Eswaramma (women representative of the Police Departments, Hospet), Miss Sharadha (President, inner wheel club), Advocate Bhagyalakshmi Bharade and Mr. Narendra Kumar (field officer, SBI Bank, Hospet), distributed the prizes to the women for their performance in the cultural programmes and sports programmes which had taken place prior to the International Women’s day.
The programme concluded by vote of thanks and a delicious meal provided by Akshaya Patra.
