Program for the Young at Risk (PYaR) Mela was conducted at St. Mary’s School Auditorium, Gulbarga, by Don Bosco PYaR, Gulbarga, on 30 January 2010. The one day program conducted in honor of Don Bosco consisted of general knowledge quiz and cultural competition for mainstreamed child laborers from the four neighboring villages. Two hundred and fifty participants of the PYaR Mela included those who were qualified from the primary rounds of the general knowledge quiz conducted in 14 schools.

Welcoming the gathering, Fr. K.J. Joseph, Director, Don Bosco PYaR, Gulbarga said that PYaR Mela is an opportunity for the children to come together and hone their talents and capabilities. “The service rendered by Don Bosco PYaR, Gulbarga, is commendable”, opined Mr. Suryakanth, BEO, South Zone, Gulbarga. As he congratulated the organizers, he exhorted the children to pursue their studies with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

Mr. Shivanand, Editor, ‘The Hindu’, said that parents and teachers should encourage the children to continue their studies and should spare no effort in preventing child labor. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Mallanna, Education Manager, North Zone, Gulbarga promised all cooperation and help to Don Bosco PYaR in arranging programs of the sort for mainstreamed child laborers.

Mr. Mahanthesh, Coordinator, Child Line, Don Bosco PYaR, Gulbarga, enlightened the gathering about Child Line and assured the children that in their real need help is just a call away. Mr. Arun Kumar, Coordinator, Missing Child Bureau (MCB), Don Bosco PYaR, Gulbarga explained about MCB and exhorted everyone present to make use of the facilities available. “Children, you too have rights, claim them”, said Mr. Bhimashankar, as he briefed the gathering on ‘Child Rights’.

The children from Don Bosco PYaR, Gulbarga, began the program with a prayer song. Jayaraj, Don Bosco, Deodurga, Mr. Suryakanth and Mr. Arun Kumar, Don Bosco PYaR, Gulbarga, were the quiz masters. The program concluded with the valedictory function at 5.30 pm.
