Children’s day 2009 was celebrated as Saisavotsavam 09, under the auspices of Don Bosco Sadhan, Monvila from November 1 to 14. The Sports Day for the children was conducted on November 1, in which more than 200 children participated. In the Arts Day on November 8, more than 500 children participated. The Finale of Saisavotsavam was held on November 14. The event was conducted in collaboration with the Corporation of Trivandrum. It was an occasion for more than 2000 children and parents from the neighbouring panchayaths and gramasabhas to come together to enjoy themselves and imbibe values and orientation for developing a healthy childhood.
The programme started off with a colourful rally from Monvila. The rally also included a fancy dress competition and each balasabha had to prepare a tableau which also was evaluated and awarded. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Sri. Jayan Babu, the Mayor of Trivandrum. The chief guest was Sri. Indrans, a famous Malayalam cine artist. Sri. V Jayaprakash (Deputy Mayor) and Adv. S A Sundhar (Chairman of Standing Committee for Social Welfare) were also present on the occasion. After this, different chance games were conducted by the inmates of Don Bosco, Monvila for the children who came to participate. All who participated in the programme really enjoyed playing the games and the winners could walk into the prize stall straight away to collect their prizes.
Everybody who came to participate in the children’s day celebration was served lunch in the Don Bosco premises. The meal was so well arranged that even though there were such a huge number of participants everything went on well and all were contented with the lunch.
In the afternoon there was an orientation talk for the parents by Justice Sridevi, the chairperson of the Commission for Women’s Rights. Dr. Madhuravally Thampi, one of the most known gynecologists of Kerala and Baby Sandra, a well known tele-film artist too were present on the occasion. During this ceremony, Sri. Ayyappadas, who secured the first rank for Mechanical Engineering, and Ms. Amitha who secured the first rank in L.L.B were felicitated and award. Both these students are from really difficult environments and had to fight with odds to come out in flying colours. They are from the neighbourhood as well; they were portrayed as icons to be looked up to for the children who were present.
At 2.45 the children had an orientation talk on Children’s Saving Schemes by the Manager and the representatives of the Canara Bank.
The concluding ceremony was presided over by Adv. K.O Asokan (Chairman, Standing committee for Development). The chief guest was Sri. M. Vijayakumar (Honourable Minister for Sports and Law, Government of Kerala). He spoke highly about the initiatives of Don Bosco and the Corporation for the development of the children of the locality. He also gave away the prizes for the winners.
The programme was a great success and all who participated in the programme were really pleased with the way in which Don Bosco, Monvila hosted this event.
