The Salesian Family Members of the Karnataka state gathered at the Provincial House on Sunday, 15th November, 2009 to celebrate the annual day together. The participants from various groups of the Salesian Family present in Karnataka had a real ‘Salesian Day’ together. The day organized on the theme of “Return to Don Bosco and return to the Young”. The programme began with members gathering at the venue from about 08.30 in the morning onwards. And it was a full day when the programme concluded at about 16.30.
In the opening session, Fr. V M Mathew the Rector of the Provincial House not only welcomed the participants but also reminded everyone of the significance of the present year being the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Salesian Congregation as well as importance of the year 2010 being the death centenary of Blessed Micheal Rua. The Salesian Provincial in his introductory talk welcomed all to the family day and also reminded the family of its greatness in numbers and in the specific call and mission it has and invited all to reflect and act towards ‘returning to the original spirit and charism’ of the founder. His invitation to all to “be the Don Bosco” of our times was well received by the members. Other speakers representing the different family members wished well for the day while presenting the theme in brief talks.
The keynote address presented by Fr. Jude Anand took the group to a better understanding of the theme and invited participation and commitment of the members who met in their local units and drew up action plans for the coming year which was shared with the entire group. The theme has been well understood and the drawn up action plans speak of the earnest interest of the family members to get into action in their own respective places. Fr. Anand in his talk dwelt upon the theme as envisaged by the 26th General chapter documents. In the action plans drawn up, one could see the eagerness to know Don Bosco better, to Love him and be the Don Bosco of today.
The Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Fr. George Mathew drew the attention of the family to the strenna of 2010 namely the call to proclaim Christ to the Young through our apostolate. The family got into a real ‘salesian’ mood after lunch with time for relaxed fun and interaction. The cultural programme presented by the various units and the songs and action and jokes kept alive the family spirit in the group. The group expressed its gratitude to the many persons who took leadership to organise the day and appreciated Fr. Thomas Vailatt the coordinator for spearheading the programme.
The day was truly Salesian in the content of talks, interactions, discussion and the atmosphere of fund and laughter. We are sure that the family bonds have been nourished just as there has been achieved better understanding of the need to be faithful to the Salesian Charism and the person of Don Bosco. The community at Provincial House surely offered the known hospitality and logistics for the programme.
