Vocation Camps in Karnataka were held in two phases. The first phase consisted of Five Camps, each of Three Days in duration, held at Prakashpalaya, Hassan, Hospet, Bhadravathi, and Bangalore (KJC). The Vocation Camp Team consisted of Fr. Johnson Konthempilly (Vocation Director), Deacon John Peter, Br. Sunil Mattappallil, Bro Roshan D’Sa and Br. William D’Souza. During the camps the boys were frequently told about Don Bosco and the great work he began for the salvation of the young. In almost all the places the movie on Johny was screened to narrate to the participants the childhood and the dream of Johny Bosco. To inculcate a taste for prayer, Adoration Services, Prayer Services and Bhajan Services were organised. Daily Holy Eucharist, Rosary and Personal Prayer were regular features of the camps. Cultural evening was organised on the second day of the camp, during which the boys were asked to enact a Gospel event, either a parable or a miracle of Jesus. The boys took active part in the programme and enjoyed the evenings. The boys were also imparted some basic knowledge about English language. They were taught prayers in English, namely, the Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be and the grace before meals. Out of a total of 76 boys who attended these camps, 38 were selected for the Second Phase.
The Second Phase consisted of a week-long camp from May 20 – 26, held at Don Bosco, Tumkur. There were 23 participants from different parts of Karnataka. The camp was marked by the customary Salesian style and activities. After spending 6 days with the boys, the Vocation Camp Team, after much prayer, evaluated the suitability of the candidates and selected 15 boys. They were asked to report at Don Bosco, Tumkur on 7th June.
