Towards the realization of the goals of the Year of Priests, the Province of Bangalore organized a Seminar (No. 3) at Don Bosco, Vaduthala from 9.00 a.m. to 04.00 p.m. on October 17, 2009. 35 Salesian priest confreres of the province attended the event. In the first session, Fr Thomas Koonan, SDB presented a Sociological Study of the Prospects and Challenges of Catholic Priests. In the second session, Fr Paul Thelakkat (Editor of the English edition of Sathyadeepam) reflected on the struggle that priests frequently face with regard to their identity. The chief speaker of the day, making frequent references to Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes and other famous pieces of literature, helped the participants to be honest in identifying the confusion of role in their lives, and to work towards discovering the meaning and possibility of being configured unto Christ. Rev Fr Thomas Anchukandam, the Provincial, presided over the Eucharist, celebrated before the lunch. The texts of the Special Mass for India (being Deepavali) were used. The concelebrating priests, after the homily, recalled their ordination motto and renewed their commitment to their projects of life as priests.
In the post noon session, two lay people, a man and a woman, shared with the gathering their experiences and expectations of priesthood. Before the concluding observations, the participants reflected on the most important internal and external transformation required in the life of priests today, and indicated how the province could proceed with the Year of Priests.
