The Salesian presence in Lingarajapuram for the development of the people living in the slums dates back to 1986. The Salesian apostolate was focussed on social justice, educational promotion and pastoral care among the slum dwellers of Lingarajapuram. From the year 1992 onwards the Holy Mass was celebrated for the Catholics on Sundays in a temporary building. On October 1, 1996, Don Bosco Parish Church was officially erected and entrusted to the Salesians of Don Bosco for the pastoral care of the people living in the localities.

The church is located in the slum area that is highly populated. The Don Bosco Church has not only been a place for pastoral care and spiritual growth but also the hub of different development activities such as computer centre, tailoring school, crèche, pre-school, and programmes such as, sponsorship and scholarship, evening tuition, DB PEARLS, Savio Child Services, school adoption, women4women India, women empowerment and development, youth animation, health and medical promotion programmes, etc with specific focus on the children, youth and women.

The parish has a membership of 2200 families. Most of them are migrants from various parts of the country seeking employment. The actual number of parishioners is about 8000. The vast majority of these people belong to the lower middle class and poor categories of the society. The sense of devotion and simple piety is a predominant feature. Though these people belong to the different language groups they live in harmony and there are good cooperation and participation to the programmes organised through the parish. The sense of unity is highly appreciable.

As the church is dedicated to St. John Bosco, the saint of the young, this presence is also a growing shrine of Don Bosco, whose powerful intercession is sought by many. The parish has regular Sunday catechism, active Salesian Co-operators unit, youth groups, pious associations etc.
