Prakashpalaya is a remote village surrounded by hills and forests situated about 90 km away from Mysore and 160 km from Bangalore. The mission station was started about 40 years ago when six bonded labourers of Tamil origin, released from their work, settled down there. Fr. Louis O’ Hendicant of the MEP society, teaching in St. Philomena’s College, Mysore, founded this mission station.
The Salesians took charge of this parish on 19th December 1997 at the invitation of the then Bishop of Mysore Rt. Rev. Joseph Roy. The parish was in chaos because of a serious friction between two communities based on their linguistic divisions. The Salesian approach brought peace in the parish within a short span of six months. From a tiny group of 18 people participating in the liturgy, today there are nearly 500 people for the Mass on Sundays.
The High School was started in 2001. It was upgraded into a Higher Secondary School in 2003. A Pre-University College was also begun to meet the needs of the children who have to travel long distances to study. Boarding facilities for boys and girls provide a great opportunity for children of the neighbouring villages to have access to quality education. Prakash Palaya and the whole of Kollegal taluk are the main target areas for our work though the present beneficiaries are those from Chamrajnagar and Mandya districts
