Tribal Youth Transform Lives Through Retail Management Training at Don Bosco Technical Institute, Sulthan Bathery

In a significant milestone for vocational education in Kerala’s tribal belt, Don Bosco Technical Institute in Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad, celebrated the completion of its tenth batch of the Retail Management Course. The program, which has now successfully trained over 240 tribal youth, marks a transformative initiative in bridging the skill gap among marginalized communities.
The graduation ceremony, held at the institute’s campus, saw the participation of 30 young graduates, all hailing from various tribal communities across Wayanad district. The three-month intensive training program has become a beacon of hope for underprivileged youth, providing them with employable skills in the retail sector.
“What started as an experiment to address unemployment among tribal youth has evolved into a life-changing program,” says Fr. Dominic Kaniyanthrayil, Director of Don Bosco Technical Institute. “The success of our tenth batch reinforces our commitment to empowering marginalized communities through skill development.”
The program’s success is reflected in its impressive placement record. Graduates from previous batches have secured positions in various retail establishments, including prominent shopping malls, textile shops, and tailoring units across Kerala marking a significant improvement in their economic status.
Arya V, a graduate from the tenth batch, shared her experience: “Before joining this course, I had little hope for my future. Today, I stand confident, ready to start my career in retail management. This program has not just taught me skills; it has given me dignity and independence.”
The course curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical training, covering aspects such as customer service, inventory management, sales techniques, and basic accounting. What sets this program apart is its holistic approach, including modules on communication skills and personal development.
“This initiative perfectly aligns with our mission to enhance tribal welfare through education and employment. The success stories of these graduates inspire us to support more such programs,” says Dr. Antony Thekkedath SDB, Manager of Don Bosco Technical Institute. “What sets this program apart is our commitment to not just providing skills, but also ensuring each student receives personal mentoring and job placement support.”
Looking ahead, Don Bosco Technical Institute, Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad plans to expand the program’s reach and introduce new modules based on industry feedback. The institute has also established partnerships with leading retail chains to ensure sustainable employment opportunities for future trainees. The program has contributed to breaking social barriers, with several female graduates emerging as primary earners in their families. It serves as a model for similar initiatives aimed at skill development among tribal youth.
