A Project for the Comprehensive Development of Traditional Fisherfolk in Integration with Mission Samudra

As a continuation of the Sea Conclave 2026, a preliminary discussion was held regarding a project aimed at creating maximum employment opportunities for traditional fisherfolk in deep-sea fishing, with the objective of strengthening the livelihoods of traditional fisherfolk in Kerala and the coastal economy, as well as reducing post-harvest losses in fisheries. In the context of the Blue Economy and Mission Samudra, the discussion focused on the possibilities of improving the economic development of fisherfolk through deep-sea fishing, employment opportunities for traditional fisherfolk, preservation of fish quality, and access to competitive markets.

The discussion was attended by Mr. Johnson R. Franklin (Canada), an internationally experienced professional in the marine and fisheries sector and Managing Director of Travancore Marine Corporation; Mr. Patrick Michael, representative of KR LCC; and Fr. Saji Elambasseril SDB, Organiser of Sea Conclave 2026 and Director of FCDP.

The project envisions sustainable fishing that protects the rights of traditional fisherfolk and the marine ecosystem without causing harm to fish resources. In the initial phase of the project itself, more than 35,000 deep-sea fishing workers will become part of the project. Suggestions were put forward for preparing a DPR (Detailed Project Report) to develop a pilot project integrating fish collection, fish processing, and marketing in coordination with Mission Samudra and other related projects.

In the next stage, the project will be presented before the Government, Matsyafed, the Minister for Fisheries, and the Chief Minister. If this visionary project is approved and implemented, it will become a new step towards the comprehensive development of traditional fisherfolk in Kerala and the overall development of the coastal region.
