Breaking Barriers: Don Bosco Open School Brings Hope to Ernakulam’s Underserved Communities
Kochi, October 31, 2025 — In a heartening initiative that promises to transform lives through education, Don Bosco Open School marked the official inauguration of its academic year on Thursday, bringing renewed hope to communities long denied access to formal learning opportunities.
Ms. Aswathy Jiji IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kochi City, inaugurated the ceremony at the school’s premises in Udaya Nagar, near the KSRTC bus stand, Ernakulam. The event celebrated not just the beginning of an academic year, but the realization of a dream for dozens of individuals who thought their educational journey had ended long ago.
A Second Chance at Education
Launched in the first week of August 2025 under the aegis of Sneha Bhavan Annexe, Don Bosco Open School began with 26 students and has since become a beacon of hope for the underserved communities of Udaya Nagar, Kammattippadam, and Karithala.
The school’s mission focuses sharply on reaching individuals who have been deprived of educational opportunities due to financial constraints, social barriers, and challenging family circumstances. This year’s enrollment tells a powerful story of determination and resilience: 19 students have registered for the 10th Standard examinations, with 17 of them above 35 years of age. Additionally, seven students have enrolled for the Plus Two course, including three senior learners proving that it’s never too late to pursue education.
Community Partnership Powers Progress
The Open School’s success is built on strong community partnerships. The NANMA Foundation and the Rotary Club of Cochin have provided crucial support, enabling the initiative to offer free, quality education to those who need it most.
“This program represents the true spirit of inclusive education,” said Fr. P. D. Thomas, Executive Director of Don Bosco Sneha Bhavan, who attended the inauguration along with other distinguished guests including Mr. Ravindranath (DYSP), State President of the Kerala Police Senior Officers Association, and representatives from NANMA Foundation and Rotary Club of Cochin.
Dedicated Leadership
The program is coordinated by Fr. Bino Nadackal and Sr. Mrudula of SD Convent, Gandhinagar, whose dedication ensures that each student receives personalized attention and support throughout their educational journey.
Speaking at the inauguration, Ms. Aswathy Jiji IPS commended the initiative for addressing a critical gap in educational accessibility. “Education is the most powerful tool for social transformation. When we empower individuals with knowledge, we empower entire communities. Don Bosco Open School is doing exactly that.”
Looking Ahead
With plans to extend this valuable educational service to a wider public in the coming years, Don Bosco Open School stands as a testament to the belief that education knows no age limit and that every individual deserves the opportunity to learn and grow.
For these 26 students—many of whom are parents, grandparents, and working professionals—the classroom represents more than academic achievement. It symbolizes dignity, opportunity, and the fulfillment of long-deferred dreams. As they embark on this academic journey, they carry with them the hopes of their families and communities, proving that determination and community support can overcome any barrier to education.
