Children’s Day Walkathon Launches ‘Sports for Change’ to Empower Kerala’s Youth
In a vibrant display of unity and purpose, more than 3,000 young people from Community Sports Clubs, Don Bosco Shelter Homes, and Don Bosco schools came together on Children’s Day, 14 November, for a walkathon in Ernakulam, Kerala. The event was flagged off by Kerala Legislative Assembly Opposition Leader, Mr. V. D. Satheesan, MLA, who applauded the initiative for championing children’s right to good health, well-being, and freedom from addictions.
The walkathon brought together children, youth, educators, and community leaders, accompanied by role models from diverse backgrounds. All participants took a collective oath against addictions, underscoring the day’s message on child rights and holistic development.
The celebration drew dignitaries from socio-religious and political spheres, including Fr. Jose Koyickal, Provincial of the Bangalore Province; Fr. Shalbin, Vice-Provincial; Fr. Joy Nedumpurath, Economer; Fr. P. S. George, Executive Director of BREADS Bangalore; Mr. Chandy Oommen, MLA; and several other eminent guests. Their presence highlighted the broad societal commitment to safeguarding young people from the growing threats of substance abuse and psychosocial distress.
A major highlight of the event was the official launch of BREADS’ ‘Sports for Change’ (SFC) initiative across seven locations in five districts of Kerala. Aimed at empowering youth through structured sports training integrated with life skills education, the programme seeks to mould healthy, responsible citizens while countering the rising prevalence of addiction and mental health concerns among young people in the state.
Backed by the success of the DREAM (Drug Rehabilitation Education And Mentoring) initiative over the past three years, BREADS has been advocating for systemic—not just symptomatic—responses to addiction. The Sports for Change model embodies this vision by creating safe, inclusive environments that promote physical activity, emotional resilience, and positive peer relationships.
In collaboration with local Don Bosco partners, BREADS is developing community sports centres—modern-day Don Bosco oratories—that serve both as recreational spaces and talent-nurturing platforms. These hubs welcome girls, boys, and children with disabilities, offering an encouraging atmosphere that fosters healthy play and value-based formation.
