Don Bosco College, Mampetta, Celebrates First-Ever Ormakoru Pononam with Elders

Don Bosco College, Mampetta, in association with GramInn Wayanad and several partner organisations, celebrated Ormakoru Onam with the elders of Mampetta for the first time in the institution’s history on Uthradam, 25 August 2026. More than 150 participants gathered in the college auditorium for a day of traditional festivities, cultural performances and community bonding. The programme featured a lively slate of Onam games, songs, dance performances including Thiruvathira, and an Onasadhya served to all attendees. Gifts were distributed to the elders as a mark of respect and remembrance. Organisers said the event was designed to bring the college and the local elder community together to honour tradition and foster intergenerational solidarity. Fr. Martian, Rector and Manager of Don Bosco College, welcomed the gathering and led action songs, emphasising unity across social divides. “We are one,” he said, urging participants to put aside differences of caste, wealth and gender and celebrate together. Fr. Jenson Variyath, Social Outreach Coordinator, highlighted the event’s community impact: “Involving our elders in Onam enriches both the institution and the wider neighbourhood. Celebrations like these restore dignity to our seniors and strengthen the bonds between students, volunteers and the community.” Representatives from GramInn Wayanad and other collaborating organisations took part in the event’s organisation and animation. Volunteers from the college coordinated the activities, ensuring a warm and joyful atmosphere. Attendees expressed appreciation for the college’s initiative to include elders in the Onam celebrations and called for similar community-focused programs in the future.
