The Salesian Presence in Devadurga began in May 1996, when the Bishop of Bellary invited the Salesians to take up the most backwards mission centres in the northern part of the dioceses in the districts of Raichur and Gulbarga.
Initially, There were 33 Catholic Families, comprising 212 persons, spread over 9 villages and the vast majority of the adults illiterate. In 2001, a boarding was launched for the education of children. Rt. Rev. Dr Joseph D’Silva, the Bishop of Bellary, entrusted the parish of Sahayamathe at Devadurga to the Salesians in perpetuity on 24th November 2001. An English Medium School was started in 2003.
At present, the Salesians are involved in evangelization and pastoral services in villages comprising a number of substations of the Sahayamathe parish. Community developmental activities and advocacy programmes in collaboration with the government and other NGOs are carried out as part of social involvement. The school provides an excellent opportunity for children from remote areas and backwards sections of the society to have access to quality education.
