Don Bosco, Irinjalakuda, began in March 1962 at the invitation of the late Bishop of Thrissur, Rt. Rev. George Alappatt. A plot of 11 acres was bought by Fr. John Med, then Provincial. Within two years a Lower Primary School, a High School and a Boarding House were started. The High school began as an English Medium School while the Lower Primary School began as Malayalam medium. The first batch consisted 130 students with four staff members. Fr. Andrew Dorairaj was the first Rector, headmaster and correspondent. The government of Kerala sanctioned Don Bosco High school as the first English medium unaided recognised residential school on 6th May 1962. The Malayalam medium section was discontinued later. The new building that could accommodate 160 students in the boarding was inaugurated on 27th May 1961 during the rectorship of Fr. Abraham Poonolly. The Boarding began on 2nd January 1963. In 1987 a spacious indoor stadium was built to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the Institution. Don Bosco Central School (ICSE Syllabus) began in 2002 in the boarding house which was closed down in 1999. In 2007 it was upgraded to ISC School. Don Bosco High School was upgraded as Higher Secondary school in May 2013.To mark the Golden Jubilee of the institutions, a new block for Kindergarten section was inaugurated on 7th October 2014. On 28th January 2017, a new Aquatic Complex was inaugurated to provide better facilities for the students.
The institute also provides pastoral care to the catholic population in and around the area by way of celebrating the sacraments as well as organising pious associations.
