Don Bosco Makkalalaya project Mysuru, started in 2006 was an initiative of Don Bosco Davengere, with the approval of the Provincial Council and assisted by the Provincial Development Office: BREADS. Initially, it was meant to reach out to child labourers below 14 years in Mysuru. In 2009, it was attached to Don Bosco Sreerampura, the Pre-novitiate House. Started from a rented house, today the project has two centres; one bought by the Salesians and another gifted by a generous family in memory of their deceased daughter. In 2015, the project became a Salesian ‘presence’ approved by the General Council, Rome.
Today, the project is a community-based programme for child labourers, school dropouts, and unemployed youth, offering education, skill training, job placement and career, reaching out to nearly 800 children and youth between 6 -35 years on a daily basis. Indirectly, the project reaches out to 5000 children in Government Schools through Child Right Clubs. The project includes a short–stay-home for urban deprived children between 6-14 year, 15 Foundation Schools in 10 slums for 500 children, 5 Bridge Schools in 5 slums for 100 children, Direct SSLC, Direct II PUC, and Don Bosco Tech for skill training and job placement.
