Don Bosco Hospet strives towards upliftment of the underprivileged through education and social interventions and enables people to be agents of their own development and transformation
  • Diocese of Bellary
  • Establishment Year 1985

1st Decade:  Though Salesians started working in the Tungabadra Dam Parish, Hospet, as early as 1982 as missionaries under the Bellary diocese. Salesians purchased a property in the year 1985 and a training centre for the poor youth of the locality was begun in the name Don Bosco Tech Hospet. The non-formal technical school was inaugurated in 1989. Simultaneously, the neighbourhood involvement and a Centre for Social Action started playing their roles. The period 1992-94 saw the initiation of a youth centre and the strengthening of the already involved Hansen’s disease colony and the active participation in the Saksharatha mission of Bellary district. In 1994, the Don Bosco Child Labour mission was launched. Simultaneously, Don Bosco Hospet served also as the coordinating centre for several activities. Prominent among them are Government initiated research survey on the problem of child labour; Karnataka Salesian vocational promotion interventions; a two year action research involving fourteen NGOs in three South Indian states, being executed as part of an international effort initiated by Amsterdam University; and the Research ‘Qualifying the Unqualified’ coordinated by Fr. George Kollashany.

2nd Decade: The year 1996 saw the launching of the Kannada Open School and the year 1998 the accredited vocational programme, all path-breaking educational and qualification programmes exclusively for the illiterate and the dropouts. From 2002 in collaboration with the government, we have taken up the charge of the management of the Government Rural Girls Hostel (RGH). This was initiated in association with the congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Immaculate. Two sisters of the MSMI joined us to manage the Girls Hostel and help in CFCA and Women’s Self Help Groups. The other projects begun by Don Bosco Hospet include Self Help Groups (SHG, 2002), the special residential bridge school for the working children (NCLP- National Child Labour Project- 2006) which has been recently shifted to DB Snehalaya Centre and the DB-CED Centre for self-employment and entrepreneurial development.

3rd Decade: The year 2008 witnessed the addition of a new feather in the cap of Don Bosco by opening a new centre  ‘Don Bosco Snehalaya’ for the residential Bridge school for the orphans, semi-orphans and child labourers. Since the project has terminated the centre activities have been stopped but NCPL is being continued. In 2009 MCB (Govt.of Karnataka) started the Missing Child Breau in Ballri. The project aims at finding out the missing children with the help of web-based technology and placing them back to their homes. The year 2010 saw the introduction of specialised skill training for the poor youth of the rural areas in collaboration with the Government of India (Ministry of Rural Development – MoRD). Many poor youths are being trained and placed in good jobs through this programme. The year 2011 witnessed another new project that was dedicated to the children at risk namely “Child Helpline” which still provides 24X7 free services for the children. The second phase CREAM- (Child Rights Education and Awareness Movement, 2013) is another vibrant project aimed at educating Children of their rights. (UNICEF-2015), which aims at forming BalikaSangas, Formation of Protection committee thereby enhancing the lives of the children in the district is being implemented. Along with this a project focusing on Curiosity building and gender equality in children is jointly launched in Hospet and Davanegere by the Netherland Mr.Tom Pot, Cees NGO.
