SIGHT Wayanad Distributes Wheelchairs and Walking Sticks to Disabled Residents
In a heartwarming initiative aimed at enhancing the mobility and independence of disabled individuals, SIGHT Wayanad, in collaboration with the Department of Social Work, Don Bosco College, Sulthan Bathery distributed wheelchairs and walking sticks to the deserving residents of Manathavady Municipality. The event, held on 4th January, 2025, was inaugurated by Ms. C.K. Ratnavally, the Chairperson of the municipality, who expressed her commitment to supporting the disabled community.
Joining her at the ceremony were prominent figures including Jacob Sebastian, the Vice Chairman, and Dr. Shajan Noronha SDB, the principal of Don Bosco College, Sulthan Bathery along with a dedicated group of students and faculty members from Don Bosco College, Sulthan Bathery. The distribution of mobility aids was not only a gesture of goodwill but also a symbol of hope as the new year approaches.
During her inaugural speech, Ms. Ratnavally emphasized the importance of inclusivity and access to resources for all citizens, stating, “Today, we are not just giving away wheelchairs and walking sticks; we are empowering individuals to regain their freedom and improve their quality of life. Every small step we take towards inclusivity counts.”
The event was filled with emotional moments as beneficiaries received their new mobility aids, many of whom had been eagerly waiting for such support. Mr.Jacob Sebastian highlighted the significance of community involvement in such initiatives, urging local residents and organizations to contribute towards creating a more inclusive society. Dr. Shajan Noronha SDB also spoke about the critical role that education and awareness play in supporting the disabled community. “We must foster an environment where disabled individuals feel valued and supported,” he remarked. The materials were presented to the municipality as new year gifts, reinforcing the spirit of compassion and community service that characterizes this season. The initiative has been widely appreciated by local residents, who see it as a step toward enhancing the welfare of disabled individuals in the region.
