Wayanad Landslides: Rescue Operations Underway Amidst Devastation

A midnight cloudburst in Wayanad, Kerala, has led to catastrophic landslides, resulting in the destruction of homes and trapping hundreds under debris. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast heavy rain for the district. The landslides have claimed over 63 lives, with hundreds feared to be trapped in the mud and debris. The Indian Army, including four columns from 122 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) and DSC Centre, Kannur, along with two Indian Air Force helicopters, has been mobilized for rescue operations. However, rescue efforts are challenged by the adverse climate and the lack of internet connectivity in the area.

In response to the disaster, the Province Development Office (PDO) BREADS and two local institutions have been mobilised for rescue operations and are providing immediate relief, and long-term rehabilitation efforts are being planned to aid the affected communities.
