Gulbarga is one of the most underdeveloped districts of Karnataka with low per capita income. The district is also slow in education with a very low literacy rate in the State. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people. Children are forced to work at a very early age because of poverty at home.
On 7th June 2002, under the able leadership of Fr. K. J. Joseph, the Don Bosco Society started its work for the rehabilitation of child labourers, school dropouts and street children, in a rented building at Gulbarga. Initially, the concentration was on starting the evening tuition centres to educate and empower the school dropouts and working children. In 2003 a plot on the Naganahally Road was bought. A centre for rehabilitation was built and inaugurated on November 10th 2004.
This centre accommodates street children, school dropouts, child labourers and other young at risk. More centres were opened for the rehabilitation of child labourers and school drop outs in different parts of the district. On 8th December 2013, a new rehabilitation centre for young at risk was opened at Bablad village near Gulbarga.
