Maximillian Kolbe Feast and a Blessing for  the Sea

Maximillian Kolbe Church in Alappuzha celebrates its feast with a procession to the sea and a blessing of the waters. This cherished tradition reflects the parish’s deep connection to the sea, which sustains both livelihoods and faith.

The feast at Maximillian Kolbe Church in Mangalam, held from August 14 to 16, brought together nearly 700 Catholic families for three days of prayer, fellowship, and celebration.

The celebrations began with the parish vicar, Fr. Jiby Parekulathu, hoisting the flag, followed by Masses with visiting priests. Events also included KCYM Membership Day led by Fr. Vadakumchery Joy, the national flag hoisting for Independence Day, and a film screening for parishioners.

The most distinctive moment occurred on the final day.

A procession moved along Mangalam Beach, carrying symbols of faith to the sea. At the water’s edge, the priest blessed the waters.

For many families who depend on fishing, the blessing is more than a ritual. It is a prayer for the sea, for those who venture into it, and for the safe return of fishermen.

This annual tradition is uncommon among Catholic parishes and gives the feast a unique character. The community extends its faith beyond the church, placing it alongside the sea that sustains its life.

The Salesians serve the parish and operate the Integrated Development Society (IDS), which provides social and development initiatives for the wider coastal community.
